Learning Skills
The Learning Skills department provides free tutoring and study skills education to students. Tutors and study skills mentors are friendly Folsom Lake College students who earned high grades and have been recommended by professors. Our goals are to help students learn challenging academic material and to help students become more effective learners.
Services Provided
Drop-In Tutoring
Learning Skills operates drop-in tutoring rooms at FLC, EDC, and RCC. The most commonly tutored subjects are ESL, Math, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Computer Science.
Please visit the Tutoring Website for details such as locations and tutoring schedules.
Science Study Skills
We provide science study-skills mentoring through the INDIS 314 and 315 Science Study Skills courses. These 0.5 unit courses offer one-on-one instructional sessions scheduled around student availability. Contact Linda Abraham for more information.
Embedded Tutoring
Each semester about 30 FLC faculty members collaborate with the Learning Skills Department to recruit tutors who are embedded in their classrooms and/or laboratories. Contact Sam Raskin to inquire about Embedded Tutoring.
Online Tutoring
Online tutoring is available for all FLC courses. To access online tutoring, simply open the Canvas page for your course and select the NetTutor link on the left side of the page.
Faculty Partnership
Learning Skills thrives through faculty partnerships. Faculty are welcome to recommend tutors, hold office hours in tutoring centers, provide feedback, or approach us with anything you would like.
Tutor Hiring
Tutoring is a great job. Tutors earn minimum wage while learning pedagogy, strengthening their academic and leadership skills, and making friends. Tutors experience a professional, but friendly and flexible work environment.
All tutors must have an in-discipline faculty recommendation to be hired. Become a tutor today!
