As colleges begin to examine their disaggregated data, they are discovering that some student groups are disproportionately impacted in terms of student success measures. African American students, in particular, have been overly represented in a host of success measures. Many of our institutions have developed learning communities, student success programs, and other strategies to address the challenges faced by this student population. A significant number of these attempts are not developed within the context of reconciling the identity of the students with the data. Participants in this professional learning experience will have an opportunity to examine the African American student experience within both a historical and social context while being exposed to successful strategies to support African American student success.
