Starfish Early Alert

Starfish Early Alert is a program designed to identify students in need of support and inform them of resources available to aid their college success. Counseling, tutoring, and workshops are among the services available to improve chances of success in the classroom.

Who participates in Starfish Early Alert?

Starfish Early Alert is a partnership between instructors, Student Services staff and students. It is the instructors' decision to participate in Starfish Early Alert. Folsom Lake College’s instructors and Student Services staff have been active in keeping Starfish Early Alert successful. Many students receive assistance in some form as a result of their instructor's actions. This shows that a concerted effort is being made by faculty and staff to improve student retention.

How do students get identified for Starfish Early Alert?

Connect with Starfish is the new early alert software that allows faculty to proactively give students positive affirmations as well as refer them to support services (including success coaches) to bolster their success.

Flag Campaign Week: During the second week of the semester, Instructors can submit Flags for students who have not checked into Canvas, need textbooks, or other support early in the semester. The student will not receive a notification of the alert, but please let them know that their Success Coach will be reaching out to them.

Progress Alert Survey: The Progress Alert Survey is launched the beginning of the fourth week of the semester and continues through the end of the semester. This is a way to provide a progress update for your students. You have the option to only submit updates for students in need of intervention. Students will receive an email about their performance in your class. See what students see. You also have the option to make a referral for support, as needed, and students will not see your request for a referral. Please let them know that their Success Coach will be reaching out to help them be successful in your class.
