Starfish is an early warning and student tracking system designed to increase student retention and success. This online platform allows faculty to provide students with direct feedback about their course performance in the form of kudos, flags, and messages. When an instructor flags a student who may be struggling or facing barriers that make it difficult for the student to succeed in class, appropriate programs and offices are notified so that they can reach out to the student to provide additional support.

Starfish is an early alert retention system used by many postsecondary institutions across the United States. Starfish will replace an early alert system currently in use at FLC called SARS Early Alert. The goal is to use Starfish to identify students that are having trouble in a class or need assistance so that appropriate student support program staff (such as counseling and tutoring) can proactively reach out to the student to provide support to help the student stay and succeed in their classes.
The Los Rios Community College District has contracted with Hobsons Starfish to provide a robust early alert tool for colleges within the district to use. FLC's implementation team is working with the District Office and sister colleges to plan, configure, and make Starfish available for campus use. Starfish is expected to be available by the Spring 2020 semester. FLC's implementation team is in the process of developing a training plan to provide faculty and staff information about this new tool. More information about training events and resources will be posted on this webpage.
FLC's Starfish Implementation Team is comprised of faculty leads, student service and instructional administrators and staff, and representatives from research and information technology representatives.

Given that faculty have the most ongoing interaction with students each semester, they play a critical role in early identification of students that are having trouble in a class, need additional academic support, have attendance issues, miss assignments, or have low scores. Faculty will be able to use Starfish to notify the student and appropriate campus programs and offices so that proactive outreach to the student may occur.
